Brief Statement of Duties
Brief Statement of Duties: Duties and responsibilities include teaching field-based undergraduate courses in PK-3, 3-6 literacy methods, supervised apprenticeship in literacy methods, and other courses as assigned. Supervision of student teachers, as well as online graduate literacy courses, with an emphasis on meeting required educator preparation standards for the state of Michigan. Advise students, engage in professional development and scholarship, and provide service within the school, university, and the profession.
Undergraduate methods courses will incorporate field-based apprenticeships in local elementary schools, so the ability to work collaboratively with PK-6 colleagues is required. The assignment may also include online teaching of graduate courses in reading and young adult literature.
This position requires collaboration with the Director of Field Experiences and faculty who teach elementary subject-area and special education methods. This appointment will begin in August 2026 and is an on campus position. This position is not currently available for sponsorship.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Education: Doctorate or equivalent terminal degree
Discipline/Degree Area: Doctorate (or dissertation near completion with degree earned before appointment start date) or equivalent terminal degree in elementary language arts/reading education, literacy, or related area from an accredited institution.
Required Specialized Training/Certifications:
Required Minimum Work Experience: At least three years of successful full-time experience teaching in an elementary (PK-6) classroom.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Attributes Required for Satisfactory Performance of the Position Duties:
Knowledge of literacy models, research, strategies, and practices.
Knowledge of the Common Core State Standards and PK- 12 curriculum.
Knowledge of teacher evaluation models and systems, including program review at state and national levels.
Ability to articulate the necessary elements of a classroom setting that support learner development in culturally responsive ways.
Ability to integrate resources, policies, and information into classroom practice.
Ability to develop and deliver curriculum.
Ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level in face-to-face and online environments.
Ability to assess student-learning outcomes.
Evidence of teaching excellence.
Ability to successfully collaborate with public schools to create and maintain field experiences in collaboration with the field experience director.
Ability to communicate effectively orally, by phone, in person, and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and PK- 6 school partners.

Experience in field-based teacher education programs.
Experience and willingness to supervise student teachers.

Experience integrating culturally relevant pedagogy into methods courses or other professional contexts.
Early childhood or special education experience.
Experience or willingness to develop expertise in dyslexia.
Experience engaging in reflection throughout instructional planning, teaching, and selection of texts and materials to advance student learning and improve teaching practices.
Expertise in using technology for teaching and learning.
Participation in professional organizations (e.g., International Literacy Association, etc.)
University service.
An established research agenda.
Knowledge of the State of Michigan standards for teaching.
