Position Description:

We are seeking an artist, teacher, and dance-maker who can contribute across the contemporary dance curriculum in technique, pedagogy, choreography, theory/practice, and professionalization. We seek a colleague whose teaching and creative work can engage students at every level of expertise, from advanced BFA students and MFA dance graduate students to general education students, a versatile instructor who may offer courses in their areas of specialization or may deliver existing courses that bridge theory and practice. We will welcome an individual who maintains strong networks within the professional field, and whose teaching is guided and inspired by their demonstrated achievement in choreographic practice. Other contributions to the program could include graduate and undergraduate student mentoring, departmental recruitment, and creating repertory for student performance. We will prioritize candidates: 1) with demonstrated ability to teach advanced contemporary movement practices (techniques), 2) whose creative work demonstrates capacity to teach students through original repertory, choreography courses, and to mentor student works; 3) whose professional and academic preparation demonstrates capacity for mentoring students toward professionalization, and 4) with demonstrated capacity to engage students from a variety of backgrounds, preparation, and experience.

A Dynamic Program: The Department of Dance offers BA, BFA and MFA degrees with a major emphasis on performance and choreography. The Department produces eight to ten dance concerts each academic year, including the annual Dance Gala which takes place in the 1800-seat Hancher Auditorium. The Department currently serves approximately 150 undergraduate dance majors and minors and 11 graduate students.

Education Requirement:



  • M.F.A. in Dance awarded by the start date.

Required Qualifications:



  • College-level teaching experience.


  • Demonstrated ability to teach advanced contemporary movement practices.


  • Demonstrated promise in choreographic creative research with expertise in dance-making for proscenium stages and/or works for screen, site, community or interdisciplinary settings.


  • Professional and Academic skills, including capacities for administrative and curricular  work, and effective written communication (as demonstrated in the application materials); demonstrated capacity to impart these and related skills to students in professionalization seminars such as “BFA Seminar,” and “MFA Seminar.”

Desirable Qualifications:



  • Demonstrated instructional versatility in more than one dance technique or movement practice, such as vernacular jazz, hip hop and street dance forms, ballet, social dance, somatic practices, or global dance practices according to their areas of expertise.


  • Demonstrated capacity to design and teach courses blending theory and practice, including courses that satisfy the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences general education curriculum (e.g. “Performing Power, Performing Protest”.
